Magna Carta, that ancient illegible writing on the skin of a dead sheep, is 800 years old in 2015. Almost everything we are told about Magna Carta makes no sense. Quite how in 1215 a grumble of greedy barons and the worst king in English history could, by arguing in French, create a Latin document that is the foundation of our rights in the English-speaking world has never before been satisfactorily explained. This book aims to answer all your questions with a readable mix of history, politics, and humor. It tells what really happened in 1215 and in the ensuing 800 years. It will appeal to readers who know little history but want to have an entertaining but often serious read and learn a lot more. Why was Magna Carta only in force for 10 weeks? Why have the Brits and Americans treated Magna Carta very differently? Why is Magna Carta relevant if you are a nudist or sell bananas? What has a surfeit of peaches got to do with any of this? This is also the only book on Magna Carta that has a joke and funny poem section. The author, a retired lawyer, is also anxious to clear the name of his great (x 29) grandfather William de Montacute, a traitorous baron in 1215. Follow the author on montacutem.wix.com/magnacarta. He recently won First Place in the 2015 Pacific Northwest Writers Association Literary Contest (Nonfiction/Memoir category).

This was really interesting. I thought a book on the Magna Carta would be boring, but the personal reflections really made it interesting. I found the history intriguing also. It really is a must read.Product details

Magna Carta Up Close and Personal a guide for the historically challenged edition by Merv Montacute Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews
Fantastic, funny read, revealing the real and little known story behind Magna Carta. Highly recommend!
I recently heard that the Magna Carta was about to celebrate its 800th birthday. Since I knew it had impacted the writing of the American Constitution, I decided I wanted to learn more. I found this book fascinating because it both educated and humored me at the same time. It's also an unusual historical book because there is quite a bit of personal connection to the author and his family. In an odd way it all fit together quite well and produced a distinctive and memorable read. The author also brings Magna Carta right up to the present and raises many interesting issues about our own Constitution.
As odd as it may seem, this book is, in many ways, ahead of its time. It has taken 800 years for someone to examine, comprehend and write a personal ‘account’ of the Magna Carta that is, in itself, a document for the ages.
Who would have thought that an author could animate such a stodgy, dusty document with personal experiences? I laugh to myself when I imagine if I were given a similar task “Your assignment is to demonstrate how Isaac Newton’s “Principia Mathematica” has affected your daily life.” And Newton’s “PM” is a mere 400 years old, a pre-pubescent by comparison. Montacute has somehow managed to erase the gap of time (centuries, don’t forget) to make the Magna Carta more relevant today than it was when written . . . well, maybe not more relevant, but sufficiently so to make this book worth your time.
Who should read it? I highly recommend this book to those seeking an experience of learning British history in an insightful, yet amusing way. I can’t recall ever reading a book of historical note that has been approached with Montacute’s view of reality. It has given me a newfound respect for the ability to make history interesting; hilarious in some areas, which, now that I think of it, fits much of world history’s bizarre unfolding.
I would guess that Mr. Montacute’s family tree touches on the DNA of David McCullough , Mark Twain and Victor Borge. Erect a mental collage of these three greats, and you’ll have a sense of the reward you’ll receive from reading “Magna Carta Up Close and Personal” By Merv Montacute.
My only misgiving is the length of the book. And yet, like the deep roots of a Sequoia, it wouldn’t be the same without Montacute’s meanderings and impressive comparisons. Yes, sometimes more can be rewarding without leaving the reader underwhelmed.
This was really interesting. I thought a book on the Magna Carta would be boring, but the personal reflections really made it interesting. I found the history intriguing also. It really is a must read.
