A ripping yarn from the early days of Empire, told from much nearer the time and informed by the values and ambitions of a different age; an age when a young man would expect to hazard his life in deadly climates, and hand to hand battles in order to establish his place in business. If you've been sent on a team or character building course, read this and cry. A long forgotten trade and long forgotten war are the dramatic backdrops, and it makes one yearn for the days when the whole world was a frontier filled with opportunities and the only stake you need place on the table is your life.
This is a story of a young super hero who finds himself in a war in Burma. A non stop action story.
G. A. Henty does it again! I was not very familiar with British/Burmese conflict, but Henty takes the reader on a classic tale in Asia.
Written long enough ago that it tells the story in a way a modern writer couldn't.
Henty writes about all the minor wars conducted by the British in the 1700s - 1800s. They are written in that incomparable British diction with cultural assumption s of the time. Fascinating.
A narrative from another time, the era of British colonialism. I was immediately reminded of the books of Louis Bromfield. Although Bromfield is a superior writer, this author did well to paint a clear picture.
I enjoyed this historical novel. I knew nothing about Burma's early history with Britain.
